Bible Study: Psalm 124

“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say; If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us: Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: Then the proud waters had gone over our soul. Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

When Israel came into the promised land they met opposition from the civilizations that had taken over the land.  Their settlements would constantly become prey to war bands and really, at any time they met on the battlefield it would understandable that because of little training and a lack of weaponry that Israel was always the underdog.  But God was on their side.  The disadvantage always have the advantage when God is on their side.  As Paul loudly proclaims in Romans 8:31, “If God be for us, who can be against?”

When great victories come we are very quick to point out the part we played.  We drop names, titles, and merits as though we turned the tide and brought the victory.  David in this Psalm after some difficult event in his life, “is careful to give all the glory, and takes none to himself as conquerors usually do” (Henry, 1994, p.931).  All the glory goes to God and rightfully so.  We have nothing of ourselves to boast about.  God alone is worthy of praise.  He is our helper in time of need.
